Tinglewood Tree Carvings Walk
Stroll through Orr Park to discover over 50 hand-carved tree sculptures by artist Tim Tingle — gnomes, dragons, and mythical creatures at every turn.
A walk through the Tinglewood carvings at Orr Park is one of the most distinctive experiences Montevallo has to offer — and one of the most unusual outdoor attractions in all of Alabama. The combination of a beautiful creek-side park and more than 50 one-of-a-kind hand-carved tree sculptures creates something genuinely unlike anywhere else.
About Tim Tingle and the Carvings
Local artist Tim Tingle began his work in Orr Park in 1993. His concept was simple and inspired: rather than cut down dead or dying trees, carve them into art. Over the following three decades, Tingle has transformed the park’s tree stumps and standing dead trunks into an extraordinary population of characters — gnomes, wizards, dragons, animals, faces, and figures that watch you from every angle as you walk the trail.
Each carving is unique. Each has its own personality. And they age beautifully, the wood acquiring texture and depth with each passing year.
What to Look For
As you walk the trails at Orr Park, keep your eyes open in all directions — carvings are at eye level, above your head, and near the ground:
- Gnomes and elves — the most common characters, with expressive faces ranging from merry to mischievous
- Dragons — several dramatic large-scale dragons are among the most photographed pieces
- Animals — owls, bears, turtles, and other creatures emerge from stumps along the creek
- Human faces — portraits and character studies carved into trunk sections throughout the park
- Mythical figures — wizards, spirits, and characters that defy easy categorization
Photo Opportunities
The carvings are spectacular photo subjects at any time of year, but the light on overcast days is particularly flattering — the even illumination reveals the carving details without harsh shadows. Fall foliage and spring wildflowers both provide outstanding natural backdrops.
Practical Details
The walk is on maintained park trails and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The park is open dawn to dusk, free of charge, 365 days a year. Orr Park is at 277 Park Drive — free parking is available at the park entrance.
