Shoal Creek Park offers some of the best trail recreation in Shelby County — over 9 miles of well-maintained trails winding through 167 acres of scenic Alabama landscape. Whether you’re hiking, mountain biking, trail running, or simply out for a peaceful walk, the park delivers a satisfying outdoor experience within easy reach of downtown Montevallo.

Trail Options

Green Betty Loop Trail (1.1 miles — Easy)

The most popular trail in the park, the Green Betty Loop winds along the banks of Shoal Creek, crossing the water on two steel bridges and several wooden walking bridges. The trail is relatively flat and suitable for most visitors, including those new to trail walking. Creek views are excellent throughout, and the bridges offer natural stopping points for rest and photography.

Blue West Ridge Loop (1.6 miles — Moderate)

The Blue West Ridge Loop is the longest single trail in the park and ventures into the upland hardwood forest above the creek corridor. The terrain is more varied here, with gradual climbs and descents through mature woods. The views from the ridge sections are rewarding, and the quieter upland environment offers a different character from the creek-side trail.

Connector Trails

Multiple shorter connector trails link the main loops and allow visitors to customize the length and character of their outing. Combining loops and connectors, it’s possible to string together routes of 3 miles or more for a more sustained workout.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Wear sturdy shoes — the trails are natural surfaces with roots and rocks, especially on the Ridge Loop
  • Bring water — especially in warm months; there are no water fountains on the trails
  • Mountain bikes welcome — the trails are shared-use and popular with cyclists
  • Dogs welcome — keep dogs on leash and clean up after them
  • Free parking — a 50-vehicle gravel lot is located at the trailhead

The park is open from dawn to dusk daily. Admission is free.
