University of Montevallo

Alabama's only public liberal arts university, founded in 1896, featuring a beautiful historic campus with classic architecture and vibrant student life.

The University of Montevallo is Alabama’s only public liberal arts university, serving approximately 3,000 students on a beautiful historic campus in the heart of town. Founded in 1896 as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School, the institution evolved through several names — becoming Alabama College in 1923, admitting men in 1956, and finally receiving its current name in 1969. Today it is a respected institution known for intimate class sizes, strong fine arts programs, and architecture that makes the campus one of the prettiest in the state.

Campus Highlights

The campus features a harmonious blend of historic and modern buildings set among mature oaks and well-kept grounds. The signature Reynolds Hall overlooks the main quad and serves as the welcoming face of the university. Visitors are welcome to stroll the grounds and take in the atmosphere any time of year.

College Night

The university’s most celebrated tradition is College Night, one of the oldest continuous homecoming celebrations in the United States, dating back to 1919. This week-long competition pits the Gold side against the Purple side in original student-produced musical shows, athletic competitions, and spirit events. In 2000, College Night was named a Library of Congress Local Legacy — a recognition of its deep cultural significance. The tradition has even appeared on Jeopardy!

Visiting the Campus

The university offers virtual, VR, and in-person campus tours for prospective students and curious visitors alike. Visitor parking is available in front of Reynolds Hall. The campus is pedestrian-friendly and a genuinely pleasant place to walk at any time of year, especially during the blooming seasons of spring and fall.
