Shoal Creek Park is a 167-acre scenic estate offering some of the best outdoor recreation in the Montevallo area. With over 9 miles of trails winding through wooded hillsides, open fields, and along the banks of beautiful Shoal Creek, the park draws hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, and birders throughout the year.
Trails
The park features a network of color-coded trails ranging from easy creek-side walks to more challenging loop routes:
- Green Betty Loop Trail — 1.1 miles, the most popular trail in the park, with excellent views of Shoal Creek and multiple creek crossings via wooden bridges
- Blue West Ridge Loop — 1.6 miles, the longest trail, winding through upland woods with varied terrain
- Multiple shorter connecting loops for customized outings of any length
Total trail mileage exceeds 9 miles when all connector trails and variations are included.
Facilities
- Large 50-vehicle gravel parking lot
- Two steel bridges and multiple wooden walking bridges over creek crossings
- Covered pavilion with picnic tables — available for group rental
- Restroom facilities
- Historic Perry Hall, a charming structure on the park grounds
Birding
Shoal Creek Park is a designated stop on the Alabama Birding Trail. Over 150 bird species have been recorded within the park, making it one of the premier birding spots in Shelby County. The varied habitat — creek corridor, upland hardwood forest, open fields — supports a remarkable diversity of species across all seasons.
The park is free to visit and open from dawn to dusk daily. Pavilion rentals are available through Montevallo City Hall at (205) 665-2555.
