Falling Rock Falls
A stunning 90-foot waterfall tucked away in the woods about 10 miles from Montevallo, accessible via an easy trail with a cavern behind the falls.
Falling Rock Falls is one of Alabama’s hidden gems — a spectacular 90-foot waterfall tucked away in the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area, located approximately 10 miles south of Montevallo. Free to visit and largely undiscovered by the broader public, it rewards those willing to make the short drive with one of the most dramatic natural features in Shelby County.
Getting There
From downtown Montevallo, take Highway 17 south. Turn right on County Road 22, then watch for Landview Road on your right. A small free gravel parking area marks the trailhead. The drive takes approximately 20 minutes from downtown.
The Trail
The hike to the falls is accessible and suitable for most visitors. The route follows a combination of old gravel roads and natural dirt paths through mature hardwood forest. The trail descends gradually toward the base of the falls, where the full height of the waterfall comes into view.
Behind the Falls
One of the most memorable features of Falling Rock Falls is the cavern or rock overhang behind the curtain of water, allowing visitors to stand behind the falls and look out through the cascade. This accessible grotto makes for extraordinary photographs and an experience unlike most Alabama waterfalls.
Best Time to Visit
The falls are most powerful and visually dramatic following recent rainfall. During dry periods in summer, flow can diminish significantly. Spring — when the forest is green and rainfall is reliable — is generally the best season for a visit.
Safety and Leave No Trace
Use caution near the top of the falls, where the cliff edge can be obscured by vegetation. The rocky terrain near the base is uneven. Wear sturdy footwear with good grip. Practice Leave No Trace principles — pack out all trash, stay on established paths, and leave the site as you found it to preserve this natural treasure for future visitors.
There is no admission fee.
