Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve

A 60-acre wetland preserve with a boardwalk trail through sycamore and tupelo forests, excellent birding, and recycled-steel sculptures by UM art students.

Located about 6 miles northeast of the University of Montevallo campus, Ebenezer Swamp is a 60-acre wooded wetland that offers one of the most peaceful and distinctive nature experiences in Shelby County. Managed by the University of Montevallo, the preserve is free and open to the public.

The Boardwalk Trail

A 0.6-mile self-guided boardwalk trail winds through the heart of the swamp, keeping visitors comfortably dry while surrounding them with the quiet beauty of a mature bottomland forest. Towering sycamore and tupelo gum trees rise from the dark water, their reflections creating a still and mirrored landscape that feels timeless. The trail is easy, flat, and suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Wildlife and Birding

Ebenezer Swamp is a designated stop on the Alabama Birding Trail, and for good reason. The swamp is particularly rich in birdlife during spring and summer migration. Species commonly sighted include:

  • Prothonotary Warbler
  • Northern Parula
  • Common Yellowthroat
  • Yellow-throated Warbler
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Wood Duck

Beyond birds, the preserve is home to beavers, raccoons, opossums, various turtle species, and a host of amphibians. Patient and quiet visitors are rewarded with remarkable wildlife encounters.

Art in the Swamp

Abstract animal sculptures crafted from recycled steel by University of Montevallo art students are scattered throughout the preserve. These creative additions complement the natural setting, giving the boardwalk walk an element of artistic surprise alongside its natural wonders.

Admission is free. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk, weather permitting. Check conditions before visiting during periods of heavy rainfall, as portions of the trail can flood.
