Downtown Montevallo Historic District

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, downtown Montevallo features over 30 historic buildings dating to the late 1800s along a walkable Main Street.

Downtown Montevallo was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, a recognition of the more than 30 contributing buildings that together tell the architectural and commercial story of this Alabama college town. In 2016, Montevallo was designated a Main Street Alabama community, deepening its commitment to the preservation, promotion, and revitalization of its historic downtown core.

A Walk Through History

Main Street is one of the most walkable and genuinely pleasant downtowns in Shelby County. The buildings date primarily from the late 1800s through the early 1900s and represent classic small-town commercial architecture — brick storefronts with ornamental cornices, wide sidewalks, and the kind of human scale that invites leisurely browsing. Many buildings have been thoughtfully restored while others retain their original patina.

Notable Landmarks

  • The Strand Theater Building — now home to Meri Moon cafe and wine bar, the Strand is one of the most recognizable structures on Main Street
  • First Baptist Church — an anchor of the downtown streetscape, the church grounds provide the backdrop for the weekly Farmers’ Market
  • Multiple 19th-century commercial buildings housing restaurants, shops, and services

Town and Gown

Downtown Montevallo is where the town’s permanent residents and its university community naturally converge. The short walk between the University of Montevallo campus and Main Street means students, faculty, locals, and visitors share the sidewalks and storefronts throughout the day and evening. Events like the annual ArtWalk, the Christmas parade, and the Farmers’ Market animate the streets with community energy that feels authentic rather than manufactured.
