American Village
A 188-acre living history campus featuring replicas of Independence Hall, the Oval Office, and costumed interpreters bringing American history to life.
The American Village is a unique 188-acre living history campus dedicated to citizenship education and the enduring values of American liberty. Founded in 1995 by educator Tom Walker and officially opened in November 1999, it has grown into one of central Alabama’s most distinctive and memorable attractions, drawing school groups and families from across the region.
What to See
The campus features an impressive collection of historically inspired structures, each designed to transport visitors into a key era of American history:
- Independence Hall — a 188-foot tall replica and the tallest building in Shelby County
- Washington Hall — inspired by the architecture of Mount Vernon
- The Oval Office — a faithful reproduction of the President’s working office
- Colonial Courthouse, Chapel, and Garden
- Concord Bridge and a Liberty Bell replica
- National Veterans Shrine honoring the service and sacrifice of American military members
Living History Interpreters
Costumed historical interpreters portray figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Betsy Ross throughout the campus. These engaging performances bring pivotal moments in American history to life in a way that resonates with visitors of all ages, from elementary school students to senior citizens.
Festival of Tulips
Each spring — typically from late February through mid-March — the American Village hosts the spectacular Festival of Tulips, with over 120,000 blooming tulips planted across the campus grounds. The combination of vibrant color and historic backdrops makes for remarkable photographs and a joyful seasonal outing.
