MLK Day March & Celebration
Annual march down Main Street followed by a program at Montevallo High School — a 22+ year tradition organized by the Shelby County NAACP.
Montevallo’s MLK Day March and Celebration is a meaningful community tradition that has honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy for more than two decades. Organized by the Shelby County NAACP, the event draws residents together each January in a shared demonstration of unity and remembrance.
The March
Participants gather to march down Main Street together, singing “We Shall Overcome” — the anthem most closely associated with the Civil Rights Movement that Dr. King led. The march is not a spectator event but a participatory one: the community walks together, voices raised, honoring a legacy that belongs to everyone.
The Celebration Program
Following the march, a program is held at Montevallo High School. The program features speakers, performances, and reflections that reinforce the march’s themes of justice, unity, and community strength.
A 22+ Year Tradition
This event has been part of Montevallo’s January calendar for more than 22 years, making it one of the longest-running MLK Day observances in Shelby County. Its longevity reflects the community’s sustained commitment to the values Dr. King championed.
